FROM THE OWENS GRIMOIRE
SPELL ONE: TO AWAKEN THE OLD WAYS
Purpose: To stir inherited magic, strengthen the ties between women, and remind certain stubborn witches that pretending not to be magical has never once made them less magical.
You will need:
One garden gate
A generous amount of salt
Rosemary for remembrance
Lavender for luck
Five witches beneath a starry sky
The blood of those who came before you
And at least one aunt who knows considerably more than she is telling you
Begin at the garden gate.
Throw spilled salt over your left shoulder. Keep rosemary nearby. Plant lavender for luck. Fall in love whenever you can—but do try to check for curses first. We really should not have to keep adding that instruction.
Call the names of the women who came before: Franny. Jet. Gillian. Sally.
Remember the old ways. Unlock your magic. Stir well.
Then speak: “My blood. Your blood. Our blood.”
If the broomsticks begin moving on their own, the spell is working.
If someone appears on the roof of the Owens house beneath a swirling, star-filled sky, it is probably still working.
If a dead boyfriend appears, stop immediately and consult an aunt.
